Hot chocolate & Churros: yummy perfection.

Confession: I have eaten hot chocolate & churros today. One thing that I have grown to love in Madrid and in Jerez is churros. Not joking when it comes along to chocolate, spanish chocolate is made with dark chocolate and it's thick, rich and...DELICIOUS. And chocolate with churros is the good pair that goes together.  In the US I have eaten funnel cake which is made at a similar manner, but eating these ridged salty sweet crispy things never passed me.

Although essentially both Churros and funnel cake are made from batter extruded into hot oil, where funnel cake looks like dribbles of crispy batter, churros are an altogether more sophisticated: long tubes which have been forced through a star shaped nozzle, to give their characteristic ridged appearance.

And I'm a fan of hot chocolate & churros. I have personally visited 1 chocolate cafe in Madrid and one in Jerez all of which located in the centre.

San Ginés is an attractive space, with velvety green seats, marble tables and lots of mirrors. One can order a coffee or a slice of some baked goodie sitting in the counter, but this is not why people come here. The churros are fresh and the chocolate make a nice accompaniment.

In Jerez, in the centre of the plaza there are churrerías (not chocolaterías) when three men make fresh churros to order, which you can take it to any of the cafés around the plaza and order hot chocolate for dipping purposes.

I'am always riveted by the process, as waiting for our churros to cook. First the man fills the batter hopper, then directs a stream of the batter into boiling hot oil.

Then he lifts out the circular cake of churro,

flips it into metal serving hatch, and then proceeds to chop it up with scissors.

I kind a lot to order a kilo of churros, just for the hell of it!. We had half a kilo between five of us, which was ample....

Have you tried hot chocolate & churros? Do you like them?
